Selçuk is a small historic town right next to the ancient city of Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With monuments such as the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, Ephesus is one of the most visited ancient sites in Turkey. The town itself is home to the remains of the Temple of Artemis, the Basilica of St John, Ayasuluk Castle, the İsa Bey Mosque and the Ephesus Museum. The House of the Virgin Mary on Bülbüldağı and the village of Şirince, known for its wines and stone houses, are also nearby.
Some guests head straight to the Ephesus site or the House of the Virgin Mary; if that is your plan, note the destination and which Ephesus entrance you prefer in your booking. If you are staying in Şirince, the steep, narrow lanes mean your driver will drop you at the closest accessible point to your hotel.
Selçuk is one of the more straightforward transfers from İzmir. Most of the way is fast motorway heading south, and you only leave it for the last few kilometres into town. Once there, the arches of the old aqueduct and Ayasuluk Hill with its castle make it easy to get your bearings.
The town is small and mostly flat, so reaching central hotels is rarely a problem. Saturday is the exception: the weekly market takes over streets in the centre, and some addresses need a detour. From spring to autumn, tour coaches, many of them coming up from the Kuşadası cruise port, crowd the roads to the Ephesus entrances in the morning. If you plan to go to the ruins straight from the plane, think about where your luggage will be during the visit; dropping it at your hotel first is usually simplest. Staying up in Şirince? The winding climb from Selçuk is short but slow.
